Dalton Castle Open Afternoons
The 14th-century pele tower opens free of charge every Saturday from 19 April to 27 September, plus bank holiday Mondays, with guided tours from the Friends of Dalton Castle. Donations welcome.

Golden Ball Quiz Night
The town’s favourite weekly pub quiz. Teams of up to six, a small entry per head, a cash prize and the famous meat raffle.

Writing Workshop
A friendly weekly writing workshop at the town’s bookshop, every Sunday from 2pm to 4pm. £5 per session. All abilities welcome, whether you’re starting your first story or polishing a manuscript.

Christmas Lights Switch-On
The town’s annual Christmas lights switch-on, organised by Dalton with Newton Town Council, with stalls, carols and festive cheer. The exact date is announced by the council each autumn.

Dalton Christmas Tree Festival
A much-loved festive display of decorated Christmas trees inside St Mary’s Church, a highlight of the town’s Christmas calendar.

Secrets of Sandscale’s Orchids
A free ranger-led walk to spot the flowering orchids and wildflowers of the coastal dune reserve, just a short drive from Dalton. Led by National Trust rangers. Donations welcome.

Ulverston & North Lonsdale Show
The annual Furness agricultural show at Lindal Cote Farm, just a short drive from Dalton. Expect livestock judging, a horticultural tent, vintage vehicles, a family dog show and children's activities. A traditional and thoroughly enjoyable day out in the Furness countryside.

In Search of Coralroot Orchids
A free National Trust ranger-led walk to find the coralroot orchid as it flowers in the dune system at Sandscale Haws. Meet at the Red Hut at the car park. Booking essential on 0344 249 1895. Children welcome with an adult. No dogs.

Furness Tradition Folk Festival
The 27th Furness Tradition folk festival: three days of concerts, sessions, traditional dance displays, a Makers Market, storytelling and an evening Ceilidh (Cumbrian Merry Neet) at The Coro in Ulverston. Run by volunteers celebrating the musical heritage of Furness and the South Lakes. A short drive from Dalton.

Furness Abbey Medieval Fair
The annual medieval fair at the red-sandstone ruins of Furness Abbey, run by the Furness Abbey Fellowship with English Heritage. Expect a living history encampment, birds of prey, medieval minstrels and craftspeople, market stalls and a hogroast. Dates are announced each year on the English Heritage website.

Women in Conservation Day
Join National Trust rangers at Sandscale Haws on World Ranger Day for a conservation work party combined with a guided nature walk through the dune reserve. Open to women of all experience levels. Check the National Trust website to book. A short drive from Dalton.
