A town with history

Eight centuries in the heart of Furness

Dalton grew up around the power of Furness Abbey, the great Cistercian house founded in 1123 whose monks once governed the whole peninsula. The town’s 14th-century Dalton Castle, a stout pele tower, served as the Abbey’s courthouse and gaol.

Today Dalton is one of the Lake District’s most characterful market towns, a relaxed southern gateway to the National Park, with the fells on one side and the wide tidal sands of Morecambe Bay on the other.
